How to repurpose one video for TikTok, Reels and Shorts without losing reach

The Kairoset team · Updated · 2 min read

The short answer

Posting the same video on several platforms is fine. Posting it with another app's watermark isn't: Instagram makes watermarked content less discoverable, and TikTok excludes it from the For You feed. Export a clean master, then adapt the caption, text and length for each platform.

Making one strong video and publishing it everywhere is the most efficient thing a creator can do. Done carelessly, it's also a fast way to get that video buried. The platforms' rules are specific about what they penalize, and it isn't the reposting itself.

What the platforms penalize#

PlatformThe ruleSource
InstagramContent "visibly recycled from other apps", with logos or watermarks, is made less discoverableInstagram, 2021
InstagramRecommendations favor original content; a border, watermark, subtitles or caption credit alone doesn't make reposted content originalInstagram, April 2026
TikTokContent with someone else's visible watermark or superimposed logo isn't eligible for the For You feedTikTok For You feed standards
YouTubeMass-produced or repetitive uploads fall under the "inauthentic content" monetization policyYouTube policy

Instagram's April 2026 update says 75% of recommendations in the US now come from original posts, and that originality is checked over a rolling 30 days in Account Status. Reposting your own video is original. Reposting someone else's, or a downloaded copy carrying TikTok's logo, isn't.

The repurposing workflow#

  1. Edit once, export a clean master. Finish the video in your editor and export it without any app's watermark: vertical 9:16, highest quality you have.
  2. Keep it under three minutes for Shorts and Reels. Both now allow up to three minutes (YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels). TikTok allows longer, so make a longer cut there if the topic deserves it.
  3. Rewrite the caption for each platform. Caption limits and conventions differ: around 2,200 characters on Instagram, 3,000 on LinkedIn, and a 100-character title plus description on YouTube. Instagram also caps captions at five hashtags.
  4. Adjust on-screen text and the hook if needed. A call-to-action that says "follow for part 2" on TikTok should point somewhere that exists on Instagram.
  5. Add captions and alt text. Burned-in or auto captions help people watching without sound, and Instagram lets you write custom alt text under advanced settings.
  6. Stagger or align the release. Publish at each platform's best time for your audience rather than all at once. Our Instagram and TikTok timing guides cover how to find yours.

Do it once in one place#

The slow part of repurposing isn't the editing. It's uploading the same file four times and rewriting captions in four apps. Kairoset takes one upload, lets you write a version of the caption and settings for each network, and publishes the clean file natively to TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn on your schedule.

FAQ

Is it okay to post the same video on TikTok and Instagram?

Yes, as long as it's your own video and it doesn't carry another app's watermark. Instagram makes watermarked content less discoverable, and TikTok excludes it from the For You feed.

Does Instagram penalize reposted TikToks?

It penalizes visible watermarks and unoriginal reposts of other people's content. A clean export of your own video is treated as original.

How long can Reels and Shorts be?

Both can be up to three minutes. YouTube Shorts moved to three minutes in October 2024, and Instagram Reels did in early 2025.
